1. Graphite Sheet Preparation Technology

The preparation process for graphite sheets directly impacts their microstructure and macroscopic properties, and therefore remains a core research area. Traditionally, graphite sheets are typically produced through compression molding or high-temperature graphitization of natural flake graphite, but these methods result in limited density and uniformity. In recent years, researchers have developed a variety of novel preparation techniques, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), polymer precursor conversion, and hybrid methods (e.g., graphite composites with resins, metals, or ceramics).

Among them, CVD technology can deposit high-quality graphite films on substrate surfaces. By regulating the ratio and temperature of the reactant gases (such as methane, hydrogen, and argon), the number of graphite layers and grain size can be precisely controlled. Furthermore, pyrolytic graphitization based on polymer precursors such as polyimide (PI) has also attracted considerable attention. This method uses high-temperature treatment (above 2800°C) to carbonize and rearrange organic matter into a graphite structure. The resulting graphite sheets exhibit high orientation and excellent thermal conductivity.

2. Performance Optimization and Modification Research

The performance optimization of graphite sheets primarily focuses on thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance. Regarding thermal conductivity, researchers have found that increasing the interlayer orientation of graphite sheets (such as through rolling-assisted orientation) can significantly improve their in-plane thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of some highly oriented graphite sheets has exceeded 1500 W/(m·K). Regarding electrical conductivity, doping with elements such as nitrogen and boron or introducing reinforcing phases such as carbon nanotubes and graphene can further improve their electron transport.

In terms of mechanical strength, while graphite sheets possess high compressive strength, their tensile strength and toughness are relatively low, limiting their use in load-bearing structures. To address this, researchers have explored solutions such as carbon fiber-reinforced graphite composites and graphite/metal composite sheets, enhancing overall mechanical properties by introducing high-strength second-phase materials. Furthermore, for specific applications (such as chemical corrosion protection), surface coating technologies (such as nickel plating, SiC coating, or Al₂O₃ coating) are being used to enhance the corrosion resistance of graphite sheets.

3. Progress in Functional Applications

The unique properties of graphite sheets have made them valuable in a variety of fields. In the energy sector, high-thermal conductivity graphite sheets are widely used in lithium battery thermal management, semiconductor device heat dissipation, and solar thermal conversion systems. For example, graphite sheets are used as heat dissipation substrates in electric vehicle battery packs, effectively reducing battery operating temperatures and extending battery life.

In the electronics sector, graphite sheets, due to their excellent electrical properties, are used in flexible circuit boards, electromagnetic shielding materials, and heat dissipation components for high-power electronic devices. Furthermore, the development of graphene-graphite composite sheets offers potential solutions for next-generation high-frequency electronic devices. In the chemical industry, graphite sheets, due to their high-temperature and corrosion-resistant properties, are an ideal choice for reactor linings, sealing materials, and high-temperature filters.

4. Future Research Directions

Although graphite sheet research has achieved numerous breakthroughs, challenges remain, such as the high cost of large-scale production and insufficient stability in some extreme environments. Future research may focus on the following areas:

1. Green and low-cost production technology: Developing energy-efficient and efficient synthesis processes to promote the industrial application of graphite sheets;

2. Multifunctional integrated design: Optimizing thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties through composite structural design;

3. Extreme environmental adaptability: Studying the long-term stability of graphite sheets under high temperatures, strong radiation, or severe corrosion;

4. Exploring emerging applications: Applications in quantum device cooling, space technology, and biomedical materials.

In summary, graphite sheet research is rapidly developing. With continued breakthroughs in production technology, performance control, and functional applications, its role in high-end manufacturing and strategic emerging industries will become increasingly important.
