Graphite packing, as a high-performance sealing and thermal conductivity material, plays a key role in the petrochemical, power, aerospace, and other fields. Its unique high-temperature resistance, chemical stability, and self-lubricating properties make it an ideal alternative to traditional metal or polymer packings. This article will explore the core technical advantages of graphite packing and typical application solutions.

I. Performance Advantages of Graphite Packing

Natural flake graphite, through specialized processing, can be transformed into expanded graphite or flexible graphite packing with a layered structure. This material maintains a wide temperature range of -200°C to 600°C in oxidizing environments and is inert to most acidic and alkaline media. Compared to traditional asbestos or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) packing, graphite packing has a lower coefficient of friction (approximately 0.1-0.15), effectively reducing wear on sealing surfaces in mechanical equipment. Furthermore, its thermal conductivity can reach 100-150 W/(m·K), providing heat dissipation in dynamic sealing applications and significantly improving system reliability.

II. Typical Application Scenarios and Solutions

1. High-Pressure Valve Sealing System

In supercritical thermal power plant main steam valves, multi-layer braided graphite packing rings with nickel wire reinforcement are used to withstand 45 MPa pressure and achieve zero leakage. A pre-compression design of 30%-50% of the initial installation stress compensates for packing relaxation caused by long-term operation.

2. Chemical Pump Shaft Seal Optimization

For highly corrosive media (such as concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid), carbon fiber-reinforced graphite packing has been developed, increasing its tensile strength to over 12 MPa. Combined with an injection-type seal lubrication system, maintenance intervals can be extended by more than three times that of traditional solutions.

3. High-Temperature Heat Exchange Equipment

In molten salt heat storage systems, expanded graphite and silicon carbide composite packing ensures sealing performance at temperatures exceeding 300°C while reducing heat loss by 15%-20% thanks to graphite's excellent thermal conductivity.

III. Technology Development Trends

Current research focuses on nano-modification technologies, such as the addition of molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) or graphene, to further improve filler wear resistance and thermal conductivity. Furthermore, 3D printing of customized filler molding processes is currently in the pilot phase, enabling precise sealing under complex operating conditions.

Graphite filler solutions, through material innovation and engineering optimization, continue to drive industrial development towards high efficiency, safety, and long life. With the growing demand for green manufacturing, low-sulfur, environmentally friendly graphite processing technology will also become a key breakthrough area in the industry.
