Graphite is a soft, black, lustrous crystalline form of carbon used in pencils, lubricants, and batteries, and valued for its high electrical and thermal conductivity, heat resistance, and lubricity. It is the most stable form of carbon under standard conditions and is found in metamorphic rocks, with major global production dominated by China.

Properties

Form:A naturally occurring allotrope (form) of carbon, with atoms arranged in hexagonal layers.

Appearance:Opaque, gray to black, with a metallic luster and a greasy feel.

Electrical/Thermal Conductivity:An excellent conductor of both heat and electricity, a property shared by very few non-metals.

Softness:Very soft and flexible due to weak bonding between its atomic layers, making it soft enough for use in pencils.

Inertness:Chemically stable and inert, remaining unaffected by most other materials at normal temperatures.

Uses

Batteries:A crucial component as the anode material in lithium-ion batteries, especially for electric vehicles.

Lubricants:Used as a high-temperature industrial lubricant due to its natural lubricity and ability to withstand extreme conditions.

Refractories:Its high melting point and resistance to heat make it valuable in the steelmaking industry as electrodes and in other high-temperature processes.

Foundry Facings:Used in foundries to coat molds and prevent the adhesion of molten metal.

Other Applications:Also used in brushes for electric motors, fuel cells, and as a moderator in nuclear reactors.

Production and Occurrence

Mining:Found in metamorphic rocks and is mined from both surface and underground operations.

Global Production:China is the world's largest producer of natural graphite.

Synthetic Graphite:Also manufactured from hydrocarbon sources using high-temperature processes.
